Progress of Indian chess: 2006

FIDE just published the April 2006 rating list. I was analyzing the four important categories: Men , Women, Boys and Girls. Here are the results:

-I am comparing this progress from 1979 when I first came in close contact with national level chess in India. That time India had no Grand Master, there was only one player (M. Aron) who was on the verge of getting IM (If my memory is correct he wasn't even IM then). Dibyendu Baruah was a very strong chess player then but not a GM. In last 26 years India has produced nearly 12 GMs and each category has at least one strong GM ..see next.

-All these lists have an Indian at least in number two position.

-This has never happened for Indian chess. The Men top 50 also includes 3 Indian GMs!!! Anand, Sasikaran and Harikrisna.

-Top 50 women list has 2 Indian GMs: Humpy and Vijaylakshmi

-Top 20 Girls list has 3 Indian chess players: Humpy, Tania and Harika

-Top 20 Boys list has just one Indian player, Harikrishna

-However, Indian standing in country wide rating is not that exciting..its number 14: Watch for improvement here.

-Also, the number of Indian GMs is just 13...that number is not increasing a lot.

-As I am writing this blog, just heard that Nelotpal Das has become yet another Grand Master from India (14th from India and 4th from Bengal after Dibyendu, Surya Sekhar and Sandipan)

-Surya Sekhar Ganguly has just become National A champion today! Congrats! These three combo Surya, Sandeepan and D.P. Singh(Jharkhand) will represent India along with Anand, Sasiskaran and Harikrishna..This team can be dangerous in next world team championship (if all of them play).

-NEXT: is this progress as expected in last few years?
